Hailing from the coastal town of Blackpool, UK, NICKO (Nick Latham) embarked on his musical adventure at the age of 11 when he picked up his first bass. Before even really knowing what a bass guitar was, NICKO was fan of many bass-centric bands including Jamiroquai (Stuart Zender), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Flea), Muse (Chris Wolstenholme), and Alien Ant Farm (Tye Zamora). These iconic players showed him in no uncertain terms that the bass did not have to be a forgotten rumble emanating from the back of the stage.
The first five years of playing were guided by the legendary Laurence Canty, the mentor behind talents such as Colin Greenwood of Radiohead and the esteemed jazz bassist Yolanda Charles, among many others. Reflecting on those invaluable lessons, NICKO shares, "Learning from Laurence was an privilege. I'll be forever grateful for the time spent with him. He provided me with a musical foundation that I’ll hold onto for life”.
In 2012, NICKO (then going by BedroomBassist) made waves by winning a YouTube video contest hosted by the prestigious instrument manufacturer, Sandberg Guitars, with his performance of 'Hammerhead.' This win catapulted him into the online music scene,
setting the stage for his future endeavours.
In the years since, he has been a session bassist for many acts, most notably etherial pop/dance band LOWES (featuring 2021 BBC Radio 1 Dance Vocalist of The Year), country rock legend Warner E. Hodges of Jason & The Scorchers, and pop singer-songwriter Molly Warburton, with whom he was also a long-time co-writer & co-producer.
NICKO's musical journey has ultimately led him to become a producer in his own right. Inspired further by the likes of bass virtuosos including Victor Wooten, Alain Caron, Henrik Linder, Thundercat, and experimental electronic music pioneers like and Aphex Twin, Mr. Oizo and Squarepusher (whom also just so happens to be an incredible bass player), NICKO has grown comfortable pushing the boundaries of his music, experimenting in diverse electronic stylings from up-tempo beats to ambient soundscapes.
His debut album, 'NICKO_1’, released in March 2023, is a high-energy record blending chordal and melodic bass guitar with vintage synths and drum machines, influenced in no small part by an undying love for 90s video game soundtracks. In September of the same year, with ‘CONTEXT I’ NICKO ventured into the ambient realm, drawing inspiration from pioneers of the genre like Sigur Ros, Brian Eno, Harold Budd, and the aforementioned Aphex Twin. This album portrayed concepts ranging from human emotions in the abstract, to what NICKO describes as the “would-be scores to real-life experiences”. His third record, 'Bits & Pieces 1’, released in January of 2024, is an album exclusively showcasing the bass guitar; presenting an eclectic yet cohesive assortment of purely solo bass and multi-tracked arrangements, each with their own story to tell. His latest release, 'The Robotanical Garden', is a synth-only, ambient EP exploring the concept of a futuristic public garden maintained by semi-intelligent robots and machines, ultimately controlled by a super-intelligent AI system at its centre [click here to learn more].
Recently, NICKO's mindset took a turn, his focus shifting away from the usual music industry hustle. "I would always be worrying; be it consciously or subconsciously, about whether what I'd made was "cool enough", or "impressive enough", whether it would be a big successful release... and what would happen if it was or wasn't. Now, all I care about is creating honest music that I am happy with, and releasing it when it's ready. That's really all there is to it". Authenticity drives his creative compass; no longer concerned with trends and accolades. "This shift has completely set me free creatively,” he concludes,
“no more overthinking, no more holding myself back”.
